These two unusual and significant one-act plays, bound together, offer
an imaginative director and performers much opportunity to experiment. They may be presented separately
or together. "And Jack Fell Down" (2m, 1w) opens with a master puppeteer introducing his
act, and then his puppets (live actors) begin to perform. But the boy puppet resents being controlled
by a master hand, and rebels. The girl puppet protests that puppets can't live without a guiding hand.
"The Chastening" (3 men) takes place in one brief twinge of memory. A man remembers the
beatings his father gave himand the freedom he in turn allowed his own son. The problem is, who is
the winner and who is the loser?Great opportunity for an imaginative director and performers to
experiment with symbolism and depth of meaning. For community, university, and high schools. Excellent
for contests, workshops, experimental theatre, and an evening of one-act plays. "The Chastening"
was given a special commendation for excellence in writing by the Texas Educational Theatre Association.
"A wonderful vehicle for actors in academic theatre."Kans. State Univ., Manhattan.
"...'The Chastening,' a one-act play I saw at the recent NADSA conference in Memphis...was a
wonderful play for teenagers."Paramount News, New York, N.Y. "We performed...and won,
so we advance to state competition."Maryville High School, Maryville, Mo. A most impressive
play, for all groups. "I recently saw a produciton of The Chastening. I liked the play so
much that I asked the director to send me the name of the publisher so that I could obtain a script."
Alvin Cohen, former owner, Paramount Theatrical Supplies, New York.
