Synopsis

Any combination of two, three, or all four of the short plays in this anthology makes a lively full-length program. All four are suitable for adults and young adults. The plays are The Lamentable Affair of the Vicar's Wife (2 women) by Guida M. Jackson—a 30-minute comedy about an upright housewife who does something she shouldn't. Jennifer's First Christmas (1m, 1w) by Ev Miller—a 25-minute humorously moving play about a lonely man and the ambitious young woman he invites to spend Christmas Eve with him. Exeunt O'Brien and Krasnov (1m, 1w) by Hindi Brooks—a 20-minute comedy about a Broadway theatre's cleaning woman who dreams of being a famous actress, and the has-been actor who eggs her on. A Portrait of Portia (1m, 2w) by S. V. Gersovitz—a 35-minute drama about a wealthy widow who commissions a young artist to paint a portrait—with surprising results.

Guida Jackson lives in The Woodlands, Texas. Her play has been toured for nine consecutive years by The Country Playhouse, Houston's oldest community theatre (est. 1956). A full-length version of the play is available in manuscript.

Ev Miller, author of the popular Close The Door So It Can't Get In Your Room and other plays, is a native of Bismarck, North Dakota. Jennifer's First Christmas, like several of his other plays, first came to public attention as the winner of the National One-Act Playwriting Contest. It was first produced by the Dubuque, Iowa, Fine Arts Players.

Hindi Brooks, who lives in Santa Monica, California, is a full-time professional author with many popular TV shows to her credit and four plays published by Clark. (Captain Noah, Computer Pals, and Making It!) Exeunt O'Brien and Krasnov has been produced by several Los Angeles area professional theatres and was included in the 1987 Los Angeles Theatre Festival. Variety called it a "light, frothy little comedy...thoroughly professional." The Los Angeles Times said, "In 'Exuent O'Brien'...Hindi Brooks has proven herself again as a capable and interesting playwright with a fine sense of observation...[The play is] refreshingly artful and touching."

S. V. Gersovitz divides her time between painting and playwriting in Montreal, where she has written 14 plays, eight of which are about art and artists. She has won nine playwriting awards. Her art work currently appears in approximately 80 public and corporate collections throughout the world. A Portrait of Portia reveals her intimate knowledge of artists and their patrons.
