As she did with her very popular Professor Zuccini's
Traveling Tales, Sylvia Ashby has given us another versatile play which can be adjusted to
fit almost any situation. Also, this script is made up of three short plays which fit together for a
full evening's entertainment; or, any one or two of the tales may be performed separately. Mrs. Ashby
chose three stories which represent the style, philosophy, humor, and color of the Grimms Tales.
Prince Bristlebeard mocks the ugliness of pride, snobbishness, and haughtiness. Luck Child
taunts the evils of prejudice and greed. One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes depicts the rewards for
goodness and love. This script can be performed by as few as six actors or as many as thirty. The
Grimm Brothers narrate the tales and also function as presentersdoing whatever facilitates the
performance; for the style is frankly theatrical. The general style should be playful, enjoyable to
performers and audience alike. Males can perform certain women's rolesespecially the Sisters in
the final story. Likewise, women can perform various male roles, such as Page, Guard, etc. Actors help
with shifts as well as supplying sound and music effects. In terms of scenery, practically nothing is
needed except a few pieces of furniture. For costumes, consider a simple basic garment to which a
variety of characterizing bits and pieces can be added. Before publication, Happily Ever
After was premiered by the Actor's Trading Post, a semi-professional community theatre in Lubbock,
Texas. Sonya Alvarado, producer, wrote: "A versatile and entertaining production for children and
adults, Happily Ever After proved to be an outstanding choice for a community theatre seeking to
do a children's production...This play is a wonderful and challenging addition to children's drama."
Another production by the Hands-on-Stage Company of Daniel Hand High School, Madison, Connecticut,
toured elementary schools and gave a special performance, sponsored by the Rotary Club, for the elderly
residents of a housing establishment. Production notes and music can be found at the back of the
playbook. A videotape of the Actor's Trading Post production is available from the publisher.
