HEAVENLY BODY

W. RANDOLPH GALVIN
Synopsis

Ralph and Carmen, two young and rather naive authors, sign a contract to write a science-fiction story, a subject about which they know pratically nothing. Ralph convinces Carmen that the peace and quiet of a remote mountain cabin is just what they need for full concentration and uninterrupted work. What he doesn't say is that it should also be an ideal setting for a little amorous adventure. Unfamiliar with country sounds, they interpret a thunderstorm and lightning to be a flying saucer landing nearby—and so they're not terribly surprised when in walks a beautiful visitor—apparently from outer space. Zenda, the space lady, quickly becomes more than an object of scientific study for romance-starved Ralph, but Carmen's natural female jealousy flares up, and Ralph finds himself in the enviable but ticklish position of sitting on the apex of a triangle. Behind all the action, is the titillating question, is this delectable creature really from another planet?

With clever dialog, an exciting plot and three attractive characters, the play is ideal for producers who like big, happy audiences at low production costs. In spite of its outwardly bawdy appearance, Heavenly Body is a play that will offend no one. In fact, with the deletion of a few lines, even high schools and community theatres in conservative communities will find it totally acceptable. For dinner theatres and other professional troupes, it is a proven money-maker.

Premiered at the Black Curtain Dinner Theatre, Indianapolis. Here's what the critics said: "After all the interest in 'Star Wars' and 'Close Encounters,' it seems about the right time for a comedy with a sprinkling of spoofy sci-fi."—Houston Chronicle. "It is a fast, witty play...funny and worth the ticket."—M. William Lutholtz, Midwest Arts Gazette. "You have to give it points on audience response."—Corbin Patrick, Indianapolis Star. "Heavenly Body is full of zingy dialogue...could turn out to be the sleeper of the year if the reaction of the audience Saturday night was any indication. I thought it was delightful.—Paul Scheuring, WXLU, Indianapolis. "Clever and laugh provoking."—Charles Staff, Indianapolis News. "Heavenly Body is a little bawdy and a lot of fun, the kind of show that we would recommend to anyone who enjoys fresh new comedies."—Bob Dixon, Greenfield, Ind., Reporter

A box-office bonanza for community, university, and dinner theatre—and for broad-minded high schools. Rustic cottage interior; modern costumes.
