Insight is a one-act drama that takes place in a high school
English class. For a poetry component, the teacher commences class by reading a poem that has been
written by an anonymous student in the room and placed in the teacher's mail box. It addresses a
personal tragedy in the life of the writer, supposedly one of the students. The students' analysis of
the poem becomes a therapeutic confrontational strategy in helping this character come to grips with
his plight. The magnitude and personal context of the poem are realized by the students as the bell
rings. When almost all the students have filtered out of the room, the anonymous student/poet stays
back and more is revealed as the play comes to a very close, personal climax.
Suggestions from
the Production Notes: Any character can be changed to either male or female. Music that is fitting
for the beginning and end would enhance the play. For the purpose of having the audience more in tune
with the discussion of the poem, it may be a good idea to have the poem written in the program for
audience members to peruse before the show.
Set, school room; present time; typical student clothing.
