Kids' Country is a 2-act musical comedy which says every
minority group in America has demanded equal rights except one. Kids. The children of Gimble Gulch
decide to change that situation. But how? That "how" makes up the plot of this immensely entertaining
and popular show as the kids decide to try to elect a kid mayor. Like a good cartoon or comic
stripanything can happen. Part of the fun is seeing how, and watching the results. Designed for
cast and audiences of children and adults (or all young people), it's a delicious spoof of American
politics with a serious counterpoint of hope for better understanding among kids, parents, and
teachers. A cable TV show and nine pre-publication productions in Ohio, including one at the Cleveland
Play House, had casts of children and adults as well as all-children (6-18 years old). Cleveland's
Laurel School of Theatre had 72 teens and pre-teens in the cast. Modern clothes; simple scenes
alternating between the apron and the stage hasten set changes. Length is controlled by the amount of
singing and dancing. "The show has a zingy plot, snappy songs and a chipper cast."
Cleveland Plain Dealer. "A hilarious evening of entertainment."Bedford, Ohio,
Times. "The show was extremely well written and the music was very upbeat with clever lyrics
and was easy for children to sing and understand ...The show incorporated a wide range of emotions and
really good comedy with a good message for everyone."Lorrie Reid, Olde Town Hall Theatre.
Cockley's other extremely popular youth musical is The Homework
Conspiracy.
