Title
THE SONGWRITER
(WELCOME TO NASHVILLE)
Playwright
EDDIE COPE, MUSIC BY BUSTER CEARLEY
Synopsis

Nashville! The very name is an irresistible lure for composers and performers of Country and Western music. This play is about one who couldn't resist the lure—Alvin Bunceford, a naive and not very talented songwriter. Accompanied by his fiancee and her parents, Alvin arrives in Nashville to claim his $5,000 prize for winning an international song contest. But Alvin is the victim of a scam artist. The song publisher who sponsored the contest, Ram Ramrack, doesn't have $5,000. In fact, he doesn't even have enough to pay his secretary. His first instinct is to get rid of this pest, but when he discovers that the father of Alvin's fiancee is a banker, Ram has visions of uncovering buried treasure. The play glows with romance, intrigue, conflict, suspense, and lovable and hateful characters (nearly all of whom have written a song). And it has a variety of music, including Alvin's tearful lament, "There's a Broken Heart for Every Song in Nashville." (This play is also known as Welcome to Nashville.)

Two acts; Set, mismatched office in Nashville; Time, present.

Other Cope plays: Agatha Christie Made Me Do It, Agatha Christie Tackles Texas, Airport 1904, Don't Print That, Don't Touch My Tutu, Frankenstein's Centerfold, The Invisible Man, The Last Tango in Pango Pango, Without a Clue
